The Club accepted the "Lioness Bridging Program" offered by Lions International and "bridged" their "Lioness Club" (formerly Sooke Lioness Club) in September 2003 which became their official charter date. There were 25 original members of the newly formed Sooke Lioness Lions Club.
In 2008, 35 members are very active in the Sooke community, but work closely with Lions and Lioness Clubs in Multiple District 19 (British Columbia, Washington, and Northern Idaho).
The Sooke Lioness Lions support the major service commitments and activities of Lionism, particularly diabetes awareness, sight conservation and work with the blind, and hearing conservation and work with the deaf.
Annually since 1993/94, the Sooke Lioness Lions (formerly the Sooke Lioness Club) has conducted its Pennies for Diabetes campaign. Approximately 700,000 pennies are contributed annually, and they are rolled by members of the Club. Since "every penny counts" we were able to donate over $7,700 to the Canadian Diabetes Association, BC-Yukon Division last year. The funds are used by the Charles H. Best Foundation for diabetes research.
We also support the Dog Guides Canada programs (Canine Vision, Hearing Ear Dogs, Special Skills Dogs) of the Lions Foundation of Canada, and the Lions Clubs International Foundation (LCIF) as well as CARE, Hearing foundation of Lions Int.
For the past 3 years we have supported the Easter Seals 24 Hour Relay Race by putting in a team. Last year (2007), we raised over $15,000 to send kids to camp. Join us May 31/June 1 at UVic's Centennial Stadium for 24 little hours that will make lifetime of difference for children with disabilities in BC!
If you wish to make a donation and support our team "The Sooke Lioness Lions", simply click on the Easter Seals 24 Hour Relay button at the bottom of this page and make a pledge. We thank you in advance.
